Operation has been launched against two women launching assault with grenade and long-barreled weapon on riot police during passage of the police in front of Security Directorate building in Bayrampaşa district of İstanbul.
The nearby houses were evacuated and students at the school on the street were prevented to leave during the operation carried out against two women sheltering in an apartment on Gazi street in Bayrampaşa.
According to information passed by Doğan News Agency, the attackers went to Bayrampaşa Riot Police Branch Directorate Door C by taxi. While an attacker threw a grenade here, the other opened fire with long-barreled weapon.
CNNTürk reported that the grenade didn’t explode.
Police carrying out operation on the building where the attackers took shelter, killed the two women.
Security sources announced the attackers as Berna Yılmaz and Çiğdem Yakşi from the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party–Front (DHKP-C).
DHKP-C has claimed responsibility
DHKP-C has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Bodies of the women killed have been taken to Forensic Medical Institute in Yenibosna.
Berna Yılmaz was jailed for 19 months over “free education” banner
Berna Yılmaz and Ferhat Tüzer had unfurled the banner read “Parasız Eğitim İstiyoruz, Alacağız (We Want Free Education, We will Have It)” in Alewi Congress during speech of then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on March 14, 2010. Yılmaz and Tüzer detained upon this were released on October 6, 2011 after staying in prison for 19 months.
Yılmaz and Tüzer were each sentenced to prison for 8 years, 5 months and 20 days over “being member of [illegal] organization” and “propagandizing for terror” on June 7, 2012.
Governor Şahin: Two police wounded
İstanbul Governor Vasip Şahin has gone to riot squad branch directorate on which was attacked.
Şahin issuing statement following the operation said two police were injured, but their condition is not critical.
“Our fellows have been carrying on detailed inspection and investigation with respect to identification and to which organizations they belong”, Şahin concluded. (EKN/TK)
