Two historical buildings have collapsed on Kurabiye street in Beyoğlu district of İstanbul. There is no dead nor wounded.
Firstly, the building in which Köfteci Hüseyin (Hüseyin Meatball Restaurant) is located started to crack, and it fell down on the building in which Kallavi restaurant is located. Both of the buildings have become unusable.
Üzeyir Karaçoban, the owner of the building in which Köfteci Hüseyin is located has said cracks ingenerated in the building due to pavement works launched 15 days ago.
“The building is already 104 years old. We purchased it in 1989. Cracks ingenerated in the building due to pavement works. We closed the shop as the cracks started to advance. Today we called a foreman to have it checked, and the collapse followed it”.
Grille chief of the shop, Cumhur Taşsöken said they started to hear cracks when the foreman was checking them and the building collapsed five minutes later.
Owner of the Kallavi restaurant, Leyla Kılıç Karakaynak said their building didn’t have any cracks but collapsed because the other building falling on them.
Governor Şahin: Buildings are certified
Governor Vasip Şahin has spoken as follows:
“A block consisting of two buildings unfortunately collapsed today. According to initial information we’ve received, there is no one inside. However, our teams will launch necessary searches and check under the debris. Our hope is that there is no one under the debris.
“Indeed existing buildings are certified buildings. We see in these constructions how urban transformation is necessary in Tarlabaşı”. (NV/TK)
