The Laborers' Health and Occupational Safety (İSİG) Assembly has released its Report of Occupational Homicides for September 2018.
The report has been published under the headline "Workers, who staged a protest at the 3rd Airport for their rights and were arrested, should be released." According to the report, at least 157 workers lost their lives in occupational homicides in September 2018.
Here are some of the highlights from the report:
* In the construction site of the 3rd Airport in İstanbul, 37 occupational homicides have taken place since its construction started in 2014.
* In the first eight months of 2018, at least 1450 workers have lost their lives.
* In September 2018, at least 157 workers lost their lives in occupational homicides across Turkey.
* 143 of the deceased workers were wage earners (worker or civil servants) while the other workers were working on their own behalf.
* While ten of the deceased workers were women, 147 of them were men. The occupational homicides of women took place in agriculture, mining, commerce, metal and health sectors.
* In September, eight children under the age of 14 lost their lives in occupational homicides. These homicides took place in the sectors of agriculture, chemistry, metal and construction.
* Last month, nine refugee/migrant workers also lost their lives in occupational homicides across Turkey. Six of the deceased refugee/migrant workers were from Afghanistan, one of them from Iran, one of them from Russia and one of them from Syria.
* While four of the deceased workers were members of a union, the remaining 153 workers (97.46 percent) were not union members.
