According to statistics by Worker Health and Occupational Safety Assembly (İSİG), at least 125 workers died on the job across Turkey in January.
Out of 125 deceased workers, 115 worked on regular contracted jobs, 6 were farmers/small land owners, 4 labored at a small business and 10 were independent workers.
Among the deceased workers 5 were women, 2 were children and 6 were foreign immigrants.
“Even though Justice and Development (AKP) government made laws for the protection of workers, workers continued under unsafe and union-free environments in Turkey,” İSİG said in a statement.
The report also warned about the increasing trend on worker casualties and criticized the ban on a strike initiated by United Steel-Work Union (Birleşik Metal İş) due to security. (YY/BM)
