Villagers from the western district of Soma planted yesterday new olive trees in Yırca after a thermic power plant construction by Kolin Construction Co. left thousands of trees cut. The event was supported by local chamber of agriculture engineers.
While the event was supported by Chamber of Agriculture Engineers (ZMO), several environmental activists who struggled to stop the cuts also joined the event.
“We have planted around 1,000 trees,” ZMO Chairman Özden Güngör said.
On November 6, thousands of olive trees were cut even though Council of State 6th Chamber ruled the halt of execution on September 28. With a delay, the ruling was uploaded on National Judicial Network System (UYAP) at late night of these same day, a timing that sparked controversy. Villagers and environmental activists have struggling to stop the cuts for weeks. (ÇT/BM)
