Erdoğan responds to CHP's 'headscarf bill'

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) shared a video on Twitter on October 3, announcing that his party would introduce a bill to the parliament for securing the right of women public servants to wear headscarfs while working in public institutions,
"We had also made mistakes regarding this issue in the past," he condeded in the video.
The bill signed first by Kılıçdaroğlu and 133 CHP deputies without any deputy abstaining reads, "Women employed at public institutions and who profess at occupational institutions and federations which are regarded as public institutions cannot be forced to wear or not to wear any clothes other than robings, uniforms, aprons which are compulsory for their profession in a way to violate their basic rights and freedoms."
"Let's amend the Constitution"
President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Erdoğan responded to Kılıçdaroğlu's statements and the proposal yesterday.
"Let's provide a solution to the headscarf problem not with a law but with a Constitutional amendment," Erdoğan said at the AKP parliamentary group meeting. "Not only that, let us make additional changes which will strengthen the family institution of ours and make us confident about the future."
He added, "Today there is no headscarf problem on the agenda in Türkiye, thanks to the struggle we have waged. If a shameful problem such as the headscarf problem was experienced in the past, the reason for this is the CHP mentality, it is the CHP fascism."
CHP spokesperson Özgür Özel responded saying that they did not intend to change the Constitution with those who violated the Constitution every day and he added that the new Constitution would be the job of the new parliament.
Erdoğan responded to Özel's statements also immediately afterwards. He said, "All has taken its course. They are not honest." He announced that they would be making a proposal for a constitutional amendment and see if the opposition will be supporting it. (PE/VK)
