Over 50 percent of society ‘believe’ Sedat Peker and want an election

The Operational Social Research Center has shared the results of its May 2021 "Politics Panel of Turkey" survey.

As part of the survey, 3 thousand 140 participants from 27 provinces were asked questions about the videos of Sedat Peker, who is accused of leading a criminal organization and has recently been sharing some videos on YouTube, implying 'state-mafia relations' in Turkey.

The respondents were asked how much they know about the statements of Peker. While 56.5 percent said that they were aware of his statements, 43.5 percent said that they did not know about them.

While 52.6 percent of the participants think that Peker's allegations are true, 68.9 percent indicated that "the politics-mafia relations are still ongoing in Turkey, as was also the case in the past."

When they were asked, "Which of the following describes your attitude toward Peker's statements best", 22.5 percent opted for "He is making unreal accusations against some politicians for his own benefit." 52.6 percent said, "I think his statements about some politicians are true" and 24.9 percent said that they did not have enough information to make a comment.

While 68.9 percent are of the opinion that "the politics-mafia relations are still ongoing, as was also the case in the past", 8 percent partly agree with this statement and 23.1 percent said that they did not agree.

When considered in terms of their party affiliation, 30.3 percent of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) voters fully agree with this statement, while 12.5 percent said that they partly agree.

The rate of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) voters who fully agree with this statement is 83.6 percent. 86.3 percent of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) voters, 51.9 percent of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) voters and 84.6 percent of the İYİ Party voters are also of the opinion that "the politics-mafia relations are still ongoing."

The respondents of the survey were also asked, "How do you think Turkey is governed?" While 50.1 percent of them said that "Turkey is misgoverned", 22.8 percent said "neither well nor badly". 25.3 percent of the participants are of the opinion that Turkey is "governed well."

The survey results have also shown that 50.4 percent of people want a snap election. 39.5 percent do not want a snap election, while 8.5 percent are undecided and 1.6 percent did not want to give an answer.

58.8 percent of the respondents want Turkey to readopt the Parliamentary Government System. 31.7 percent expressed their support for the current Presidential Government System. (RT/SD)
