A trustee has been appointed to the municipality of Hani of Diyarbakır province.
Hani Mayor from Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Abdurrahman Zorlu who was dismissed and taken into custody on September 2 as a part of the investigation launched into the PKK/KCK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party/Kurdistan Communities Union) was arrested on September 30 on charge of “being a member of the terrorist organization”.
After Zorlu being dismissed, Diyarbakır Governorate appointed Kocaköy Sub-governor Yusuf Turhan to Hani Municipality as a trustee.
What had happened?
On September 11, 2016, trustees were appointed to municipalities of two provinces, 24 districts and two towns. Two of these municipalities were under administration of MHP (Nationalist Movement Party), three under AKP (Justice and Development Party) and the rest 24 were under DBP (Democratic Regions Party) administration.
The Ministry of Interior in its statement had announced that the trustees were appointed to 24 municipalities for supporting PKK-KCK (Kurdistan Workers Party-Kurdistan Communities Union) and to four others for supporting FETÖ (Fethullahist Terrorist Organization).
On September 21, 2016 İdil Co-Mayor Mehmet Muhdi Aslan was taken into custody in a raid in his house on claims of “being a member of an [illegal] organization”. A trustee was later appointed to İdil Municipality.
DBP Legal Commission made an individual application to the Constitutional Court (AYM) on behalf of the co-mayors with regards to the appointment of trustees. (NV/DG)
