Ali Şeker, a former Member of Parliament for the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in İstanbul, was assaulted in the village of Karaali, Eyyubiye, Urfa while attempting to protest against people voting on behalf of others.
The attack was announced by Özgür Özel, CHP's deputy chairperson, who stated that Şeker was physically assaulted and his mobile phone was broken.
Özel stated that the former lawmaker was stationed in the Karaali village of Eyyubiye, Urfa. "Our party-appointed observer was physically attacked and had his mobile phone damaged when he objected to irregularities such as men voting on behalf of women, instead of the women themselves," the chairperson explains.
Mahmut Tanal, a CHP Member of Parliament from Urfa, visited the concerned polling station and shared a post urging the relevant authorities to take necessary action.
Talking to ANKA News Agency, Şeker stated that he faced an attempted lynching by a group of around 30 people.
"They placed the ballot boxes in the village's 'funeral house' instead of the school. The ballot box was named Karaali Primary School. In the first round, the results were 366 votes for Erdoğan and 1 vote for our party. They are also casting votes on behalf of absent voters. Not a single woman came to vote. The irregularities continued even after the attempted lynching. I left the scene after our MP Mahmut Tanal arrived," Şeker remarks, adding that he intends to file a criminal complaint regarding the attack. (RT/PE)
