The Gendarmerie General Command and the Security General Directorate have announced that they will file a criminal complaint against Canan Kaftancıoğlu, the İstanbul chairperson of the Republican People's Party (CHP).
This comes after the politician cautioned balloting committee members about the possibility of police officers casting multiple votes using document number 142.
Yesterday (May 27), Kaftancıoğlu shared a post on her Twitter account warning balloting committee members about the potential for security officers to cast multiple votes using document number 142. This document allows them to vote in any ballot box within their service area during the election.
In response to her post, the Gendarmerie General Command and the Security General Directorate issued a written statement, accusing Kaftancıoğlu of insulting Turkey's police and gendarmerie and targeting their integrity with false allegations. They described her expressions as lies, demagogy, and insults, emphasizing that they do not accept such behavior.
"Kaftancıoğlu and those like her, no matter what they do, will not be able to divert us from our path or disrupt our fight against terrorism, despite all their attempts. The ones who deserve to be spat upon are not our heroic police and gendarmerie but the terrorist organizations she walks hand in hand with and forms close friendships with," the gendarmerie and security authorities note.
They claim that her post aims to spread suspicion among the public and is an example of disinformation, revealing her character. Further stating that the security forces' voting procedures are clearly defined by law, and raising suspicions about them is a waste of time.
"Our Election Law No. 298 is clear. The security forces are responsible for election security. The procedures and principles regarding how the security forces will exercise their most natural right as citizens, which is the right to vote, are well-defined. Portraying this process as suspicious and casting doubt on the security forces is futile. Due to her false accusations and lies, a criminal complaint will be filed against Kaftancıoğlu," they declare.
What did Kaftancıoğlu say?
In her post, the chairperson addressed all citizens serving in the balloting committees for the second round of the presidential elections.
She informed them that police officers could vote using document number 142 and instructed committee members to examine this document carefully.
"If you catch anyone in the act, keep a report. Talk to the lawyer appointed at your polling station school, and don't forget to make a criminal complaint about the person. You may also spit in the person's face but no need. Because this is an act that only shameless people do," she noted.
