Interior minister engages in Twitter feud with Demirtaş over deadly Mersin attack

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu attacked imprisoned Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş after his message to denounce Monday's (September 26) attack on police that left one officer and two militants killed.

In a message posted on his Twitter account a day later, Demirtaş denounced the attack, saying "we will oppose every kind of violence and insist on democratic politics."

Quoting his tweet, Soylu called Demirtaş a "murderer" and wrote, "The perpetrator of October 6-8, who praised the chief terrorist just a week before, denounces the 'armed attack' in Mersin.

"You are so disgusting and low that you whitewash PKK, which you are a perpetrator together with. Because the strongest partnership is the partnership in crime."

Responding to the minister later in the day, Demirtaş wrote, "What's up, Dirty? Have your dark political plans been foiled? Is that why you are so angry? Despite you, we will bring peace, serenity and fraternity to this country."

Soylu then shared another tweet, saying people don't join the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) as long as the likes of Demirtaş are behind bars.

"We will expect the same message when his PKK executive brother in Qandil is put in a yellow bag," he wrote.

On late Monday, two suspected PKK members carried out an armed and bomb attack on a police accommodation facility in Mersin, southern Türkiye.

The two women initially attacked the officers with rifles and eventually detonated the bombs in their backpacks after they were wounded in the clash with the police. One officer was killed and another was wounded in the explosion.
