The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Vice Chair and Spokesperson Faik Öztrak has held a press conference about today's (May 16) Party Assembly meeting.
About the Court of Cassation's decision to uphold the prison sentence of Canan Kaftancıoğlu, the Istanbul head of the CHP, Öztrak said, "The addressee of the injustice against Kaftancıoğlu is not only our party but also entire Turkey, which is longing for democracy."
The top appeals court on Thursday (May 12) upheld Kaftancıoğlu's sentences for three separate offenses because of her social media posts from years ago.
"Those who rely on the mafia, gangs and paramilitary organizations can give nothing to this country and our people. We will change this dark order through democratic means," Öztrak further said.
CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on Friday went in front of the headquarters of SADAT, a private military contractor with close ties to the government, and described the group as a "paramilitary organization training terrorists." Kılıçdaroğlu claimed that SADAT would threaten election security.
Election security was also on the agenda at today's meeting, according to Öztrak. "We will prevent any attempt that would cast a shadow over the upcoming elections and to undermine election security. We will ensure election security at any cost. Together with our people, we will end the authoritarian rule of the palace."
