Sedat Peker claims interior minister armed civilians after 2016 coup attempt

Convicted mob boss Sedat Peker, who has been making claims and revelations about mafia-state relations in Turkey, claimed that the minister of interior distributed unregistered weapons to civilians during and after the coup attempt on July 15, 2016.
Civilians were first armed on the day of the attempted coup to defend the government against putschists but it continued even months after that and the distributed weapons were not registered in the state inventory, Peker claimed in a series of Twitter posts yesterday (July 9).
The ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) youth organizations were involved in the scheme, he added.
Addressing Minister Soylu, whom he nicknamed "Fancy Sülü," Peker wrote, "When you were playing the hero on July 15 and joined the raid on the TRT [state broadcaster occupied by putschists] building, there were many people with Kalashnikovs. These weapons are not registered in the state inventory ... None of the weapons the distribution of which was coordinated by you are in the state inventory.
"Why did you continue to distribute these weapons after July 15 with the shady organization that plans to make you the president? You know, it is the duty of the Special Warfare Department to distribute these weapons when needed.
"... The most important part of the aim of provoking people's national and religious sentiments is the weapons that you clandestinely distributed to many groups."

Peker described in detail one case of delivery, citing a civil servant at the Ministry of Interior, Ahmet Onay, who was wounded during the clashes on the day of the coup attempt.
He said a case of Kalashnikov rifles was delivered to the deputy head of the AKP İstanbul youth branch, Osman Tomakin in İstanbul's Fatih district in August 2016. Tomakin used the official car of the AKP youth head to avoid police controls, he claimed.
Ahmet Onay was in the car that brought the weapons from Esenyurt district to Fatih, Peker said. Onay confirmed that he was in the car and the meeting Peker mentioned took place but said he was not aware of a weapons delivery. He said he didn't get out of the car because he was still wounded so "I didn't see what they exchanged."

Following his release in 2014 after serving 10 years in prison, Peker took a pro-government stance, publicly expressing his opinions on current affairs and holding pro-government rallies attended by thousands of people. At the time, he was described as a "businessperson" in the pro-government media and received "businessperson of the year" awards from several different organizations. In late 2019, he reportedly left the country to avoid arrest in an investigation against him for leading an organized crime group. In February 2020, he announced on YouTube that he was in Montenegro. Denying the arrest warrant claims, he said he had gone to the country to complete his university education and would come back to Turkey. Turning against his former allies, Peker began his revelations on YouTube in early May, after, according to him, Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu failed to keep his promise that he would be able to return to the country in April. Peker has targeted several former and incumbent government officials in his videos, making serious accusations against them, including international drug smuggling, political assassinations, corruption, sexual assault and murder. Along with Soylu, former Minister of Interior Mehmet Ağar, his son and AKP deputy Tolga Ağar, former PM Binali Yıldırım's son Erkam Yıldırım, and former intelligence and military officer Korkut Eken are among Peker's high-profile targets. Peker's videos have had over 100 million views on YouTube and dubbed as the "Sedatflix" on social media. The government and relevant people have dismissed some of his claims while remaining silent about others. However, he was not able to release a new video after June 20 because the country he resides in did not allow him due to security concerns, according to Peker. He continues his claims on Twitter.
