Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) İstanbul MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu has released his "Report on Violations of Rights in 2020."
The report of the MP has shown that the right to life of 3 thousand 362 people were violated in Turkey last year.
According to the report, 38 lost their lives in prisons and 1,855 people were subjected to torture. The report has further stressed that 3 thousand 534 people were tortured; 15 of these people were children.
In 2020, 38 meetings and events were banned and security forces intervened into 753 demonstrations and events.
2 thousand 123 people were taken into custody during demonstrations and events, 44 people were arrested and 294 people were convicted in the lawsuits filed over meetings and demonstration marches.
Referring to the Independent Journalism Platform, the report of the MP has indicated that at least 87 journalists and press members were either arrested or convicted in Turkey as of December 4, 2020.
The report's chapter on freedom of association has referred to the trustee appointed by the state to replace Peoples' Democratic Party's (HDP) arrested and dismissed Kars Co-Mayor Ayhan Bilgen.
According to the report, since the last local elections in Turkey on March 31, 2019, trustees have been appointed to 48 HDP municipalities, including 5 metropolitan municipalities, 3 provincial municipalities, 33 district municipalities and 7 town municipalities and to one district municipality of the main opposition CHP.
