Shortly after Devlet Bahçeli, the Chair of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) allying with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), called on the authorities to close the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), former HDP MP Sırrı Sakık has commented on the issue for Medyascope.tv.
"Closing a political party is not the solution. Our nine parties have been closed so far; they now say that the 10th should be closed as well. Even if there is no letter left in the alphabet, we will carry on our political struggle by buying letters and founding a new party," Sırrı Sakık has noted.
Sakık has also said that he sees the possibility of a new resolution process for the Kurdish question, noting that there is a need for such a process.
'MHP is giving a message to the judiciary'
According to Sakık, not only Bahçeli's call for "closing the HDP", but his other remarks should also be underlined. Sakık has said:
"They are also giving a message to the judiciary. I mean, they are asking why [former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş] has been arrested for four years without even an indictment being issued.
"In 2002, when it was a partner in the coalition, the MHP enabled that capital punishment was abolished. That was the only right thing that they did. They also know it very well that closing the HDP is not the solution."
'Reforms must be introduced'
Sırrı Sakık has also stressed that reforms in the economy and law are necessary, estimating that there may be a possibility of a new resolution process for the Kurdish question in Turkey. Emphasizing that it needs to be done as soon as possible, Sırrı Sakık has said:
"They compile three speeches and make up [a charged offense of] establishing an organization and being a member of an organization. Their establishment of a new party against the HDP with the people who used to be within the HDP would not be responded by people. HDP has become the voice and hope of all oppressed people today."
