The Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched a "terrorism investigation" against Peoples' Democratic Party's (HDP) elected co-mayors for the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality and MP Berdan Öztürk.
The Prosecutor's Office reportedly stated yesterday's (April 4) meeting at the HDP's provincial building in Diyarbakır as the reason for the investigation. Along with Mızraklı and Alaökmen, the party's district mayors also attended the meeting.
According to the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), the Prosecutor's Office launched the investigation because of "singing the so-called anthem of the organization, which praises the armed terrorist organization and the terrorists, chanting slogans in favor of Abdullah Öcalan, the ringleader of the terrorist organization, and making statements that praise the terrorist organization and the terrorists."
Adnan Selçuk Mızraklı and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık were elected the co-mayors of the mostly Kurdish-populated southeastern city with 62 percent of the votes in the March 31 local elections. (TP/VK)
