Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel has made a statement ahead of her meeting with President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who is currently in Germany as part of his state visit from September 27 to 29.
Merkel has stated that she will raise the issues of human rights and the situation of the citizens of Germany arrested in Turkey for political reasons in her meeting with Erdoğan.
President Erdoğan will meet President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel today. Erdoğan and Merkel are expected to hold a joint press conference after their meeting.
"State of human rights is not how I think of"
As reported by Deutsche Welle Türkçe, Merkel spoke in a meeting held yesterday (September 27) and said, "The state of human rights in Turkey is not how I think of."
Merkel also stated that she will address the situation of the citizens of Germany, who have been behind bars in Turkey for political reasons, during her meeting with President Erdoğan.
Emphasizing that Turkey and Germany have to work in an economic cooperation, Merkel also added that a direct economic aid to Turkey by Germany is out of question. (EKN/SD)
