President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chair Devlet Bahçeli met this afternoon (April 18) after MHP leader’s call for snap election yesterday.
Following the meeting at Beştepe, Erdoğan said:
“We’ve had a very fruitful meeting with Bahçeli. As you know, we had exchange of ideas with Mr. Bahçeli numerous times concerning domestic and foreign developments. We’ve found a chance to evaluate his proposal in his group meeting about the elections be scheduled to an earlier time.
“Dear friends, July 15 coup attempt is the milestone of a new era in politics as well as many areas.
“The constitutional amendment will be in effect after the first elections. However, Turkey has still been governed with the old system. Diseases of the old system confront us in each step we take. Nevertheless, our choice was to hold the elections in November 2019. However, both internal incidents in Syria and uncertainties in Turkey need to be overcome as soon as possible.
“We’ve deliberated the matter thoroughly with Mr. Bahçeli and authorized bodies. As a result, we’ve come to a consensus that we need to approach positively to this snap election proposal”. (PT/TK)
