Spokesperson for Federal Government Steffen Seibert, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Dilek Mayatürk Yücel’s official meeting has been announced on Twitter. Seibert stated that Merkel and Yücel discussed detention conditions of journalist Deniz Yücel for whom an indictment hasn’t been prepared for eight months.
Time granted by ECtHR to Turkey for defense is over
Die Welt correspondent to Turkey Deniz Yücel was detained on February 14 in the investigation launched into the news reports e-mail leakage of Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak, and was arrested on February 27.
Deniz Yücel has been behind bars since February 27. Upon an application submitted to the European Court of Human Rights, the court had granted Turkey an extension of time for government of Turkey to send its statement of defense.
The extension ended on Monday (October 23).
Ömer Çelik was released
As part of the investigation in which Yücel was detained, Diken’s former editor Tunca Öğreten, closed Dicle News Agency (DİHA) News Director Ömer Çelik, BirGün daily newspaper staff Mahir Kanaat have been detained on remand; DİHA correspondent Metin Yoksu, Yolculuk newspaper Editor-in-Chief Eray Sargın and ETHA Managing Editor Derya Okatan appeared before court for the first time yesterday (October 24).
Ömer was released on probation. The next hearing was adjourned to December 6. (PT/TK)
