Police attacked protesters in Kadıköy on Friday (August 11) who were demonstrating in solidarity with academic Nuriye Gülmen and teacher Semih Özakça on the 156th day of their hunger strike which they went on to be reinstated to their jobs they lost through a statutory decree.
The protest in front of Süreyya Opera House in Kadıköy district of İstanbul began at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening. The police attacked the group attempting to hold banners reading "We want our jobs back on the 156th day of the hunger strike".
16 people including Gülsüm Elvan, mother of Berkin Elvan who was murdered during Gezi Resistance in 2013 were battered and taken into custody. According to reports on the media, Gülsüm Elvan's left arm got broken while being battered. On Monday, the doctors will determine whether an operation is necessary to treat her arm.
After giving her testimony, Elvan was released from the police station on order from the Prosecutor's Office. Others who were also taken into custody, were released after the detention procedures were completed in Vatan Security Department. (EA/DG)
