Germany has submitted a draft paper to the European Commission asking that financial pressure on Turkey be raised to protect democracy and the rule of law.
It also said the European Commission should look into suspending all pre-accession aid to Turkey if the need arises.
Stressing that “preparatory work on negotiations with Turkey about modernizing the EU-Turkey Customs Union because it would send the wrong signal”, the paper mentioned that the EU countries should stay away from giving the procuration to the EU commission about this matter.
“Aids must be shifted to NGOs”
According to the reports by Deutsche Welle and Reuters, the financial aids granted to Turkey must be formed to sustain the norms concerning democracy and the rule of law.
The draft paper asked that the “financial aids must be directed towards the benefit of the NGOs”.
The document was submitted High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn as well. (AS/TK)
