Lawyer and politician Şerafettin Kaya, a prominent figure of the Kurdish political movement, died in Germany and has been laid to rest in Turkey's Kurdish-majority eastern province of Muş, where he was born.
The funeral of Kaya was attended by Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Muş MPs Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit and Şevin Coşkun, Bitlis MP Mahmut Celadet Gaydalı, the HDP Muş Provincial Organization representatives, Muş Bar Association lawyers and Kaya's relatives.
About Şerafettin Kaya
Boring in Muş's Varto district in eastern Turkey on December 1, 1933, Şerafettin Kaya received his primary education in Muş.
After he graduated from the teacher training school in eastern Erzurum province in 1951, he worked as a teacher for some time. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Ankara University in 1962 and started working as a lawyer. Following the military memorandum on March 12, 1971, he followed the cases of several political prisoners and represented them at court.
He was taken into custody and tortured after the military coup in Turkey on September 12, 1980. He came to be known as both a defendant and an attorney of the cases where Kurds were put on trial.
Aggrieved by the inhuman treatment in Diyarbakır No. 5 Prison, he also followed and exposed incidents of torture as a lawyer. He wrote a book titled "Diyarbakır'da İşkence" (Torture in Diyarbakır). Leaving Turkey in the 1990s, Kaya went to Germany and lived there until his passing. (AEK/SD)
