The Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation against Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) İstanbul MP Erol Katırcıoğlu on charge of "propagandizing for a terrorist organization."
The reason for the investigation is that, leaving the party building, Katırcıoğlu gave a victory sign while passing by the mothers who were protesting in front of the HDP Office in Turkey's Kurdish-majority southeastern province of Diyarbakır, saying that their children were abducted and taken to the mountain by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
As reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation against Katırcıoğlu, who gave a victory sign while leaving the HDP Diyarbakır Office after an event, on charge of "propagandizing for a terrorist organization."
Saying that their children were abducted and taken to the mountain by the PKK, the families have been staging a sit-in protest in front of the HDP Diyarbakır Office for 508 days since September 3, 2019.
While the victory sign, or the v-sign, is usually associated with the PKK in Turkey, the HDP is also accused of having links to the organization, especially by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its ally Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).
