Two airstrikes targeted Kurdish forces in Syria's north within three days. While Turkey has yet to release an official statement on the matter, footage purportedly related to the strikes have been featured in pro-government media outlets.
The first airstrike, which occurred on September 15 in the northern Syrian city of Manbij, targeted a vehicle, killing three members of the Women's Defense Units (YPJ). The second airstrike took place on September 17 on the Amuda-Qamishli road in northeastern Syria, targeting a vehicle and resulting in the deaths of two members of the Asayish security forces.
The killed individuals in the first strikes were identified as YPJ Military Council members Şervin Serdar, Nucan Öcalan, and Canda Cûdi ANHA reported. In the second attack, eight individuals were wounded in addition to the two casualties.
The Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed "profound sadness" in response to the deaths of the three YPJ members. A social media post from the ministry highlighted the meeting between Minister Jean Asselborn and one of the fallen YPJ members, Şervîn Serdar, in 2016.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Turkey has carried out at least 49 drone strikes targeting the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria since the beginning of 2023. These attacks left 62 people dead, including 13 civilians and 49 military personnel, and more than 57 people wounded. (VC/VK)
