Asylum applications by citizens of Turkey to European Union (EU) member countries increased by 45 percent in a year to exceed 20,000, according to figures released by Eurostat.
Some 7,925 asylum applicants from Turkey were granted protection status last year, making up 3 percent of all positive asylum applications.
In 2021, EU member states granted protection status to 267,360 asylum seekers, down by 5 percent compared to the previous year. People from Syria received the highest number of protection status in the EU last year with 69 140, followed by citizens of Afghanistan. Afghans.
The highest share of persons who received protection status were registered in Germany (33 percent of the EU total), ahead of France (17 percent), Italy (12 percent), and Spain (8 percent).
