Having been sentenced to prison by Turkish Penal Code Article 301 in the past, Reyhan Çapan, the former editor-in-chief of Özgür Gündem, which was closed by statutory decree, has been detained in Hopa, Artvin.
As reported by Mezopotamya Agency, Çapan is expected to be taken to Hopa Prosecutor’s Office today (May 10). There is a detention warrant for Çapan.
The verdict in the case, which was filed on charge of “Insulting Turkishness, the Republic, state institutions and organs”, was announced by İstanbul 2nd Heavy Penal Court on March 29, and Çapan was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months in prison for committing the same crime more than once.
Çapan has been tried in the trial heard at 14th Heavy Penal Court against Özgür Gündem. The last hearing was held on May 7. (ŞA/TK)
