Sub-Governor has a restraining order issued against local journalist

Tekirdağ Şarköy Sub-Governor Şenol Kaya applied to the Penal Court of First Instance and had a 1-month restraining order issued against Nuri Çağlar, the owner of Şarköy Haber Newspaper and a representative of the Demirören News Agency (DHA) in the northwestern province.

Kaya was appointed as the Şarköy Sub-Governor on July 20, 2020. The local newspapers in the district covered the news about the unlicensed construction that he undertook in the lodgings where he stayed.

Following this news on unlicensed construction in the lodgings, journalist Nuri Çağlar reported another news about Sub-Governor Kaya with a photograph showing that the District Security Directorate personnel working as security guards in the lodgings were washing his private car.

In the local newspaper that he owns, Çağlar reported on this issue with the title, "Look what this Sub-Governor is doing."

Sub-Governor applied to the prosecutor

After this news story was published, Şarköy Sub-Governor Kaya applied to the Şarköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and filed a criminal complaint. Upon this complaint, the office appealed to the Şarköy Penal Court of First Instance and demanded a protection measure as per the "Law no. 6284 on the Protection of Family and Prevention of Violence Against Women."

Upon this request, the penal court has issued a restraining order against journalist Nuri Çağlar for a period of 1 month.

That being the case, for 1 month, Nuri Çağlar will be unable to go to the places where the Sub-Governor is, especially his residence and workplace (Government Office, where he works), and he will be unable to utter any words or show any behavior involving violence or fear.

The same restraining order stipulates that journalist Nuri Çağlar will be unable to write or post anything that would disturb Sub-Governor Şenol Kaya in his newspaper or on social media accounts.

He will be arrested if he approaches him

When the related legal provision brought against Çağlar is closely observed, it is seen that "if the person who inflicted violence acts in violation of the measures imposed as per the Law no. 6284, he or she will be imprisoned for 3 days to 10 days, depending on the form of the measure and gravity of the violation even if the act constitutes a crime; he of she will be imprisoned for 15 days to 30 days everytime the violation is repeated, depending on the measure and the gravity of the violation."

In other words, in the event that journalist Nuri Çağlar acts against this restraining order, he will be arrested.

Çağlar will appeal against the restraining order. (YÖ/HA/SD)
