In police operations conducted in 12 provinces, around 100 people, including lawyer Seda Şaraldı and Grup Yorum band members, were detained.
Taken into custody in her hometown Tavas in Denizli, lawyer Seda Şaraldı was the law apprentice of arrested lawyer Ebru Timtik, who lost her life on a death fast for a fair trial. Şaraldı received her attorney's license a year ago.
Speaking to bianet, lawyer Aytaç Ünsal, who was also on a death fast, has said, "They want to destroy everything sister Ebru lived through."
According to a statement released by the People's Law Bureau, lawyer Şaraldı will be taken to the İstanbul Security Directorate today (October 30).
'The same decision could have been given'
Ending his death fast after 214 days, lawyer Ünsal has said, "On the 214th day of the death fast, the execution of my sentence was deferred and I was released. I have been in treatment since September 3."
Ünsal has underlined that the same thing could have been done for death fasting arrested lawyer Ebru Timtik:
"The same decision could have been given for lawyer Ebru Timtik, with whom I had been on a death fast together. Ebru was killed with the indecision of the Court of Cassation. There was actually no indecision. Ebru Timtik was going to be executed. The decision had been taken behind closed doors. The execution was done by the hand of high judicial bodies.
"That is why, sister Ebru is not with me in the shanty house in Küçük Armutlu where I am being treated. I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet. I have great difficulty walking. I cannot yet visit her grave for this reason.
"But, her law apprentice lawyer Seda Şaraldı works at the People's Law Bureau. She used to visit me frequently. I could not see sister Ebru, but I could talk to the young and hopeful lawyers that she had left her mark on. So, Ebru could live everywhere.
"They are now trying to deprive me of this right as well. They want to destroy everything that sister Ebru lived through. Lawyer Seda Şaraldı was detained while she was in her hometown Tavas in Denizli. Those who killed sister Ebru took her into custody at 2 at night.
"By detaining my fellow lawyers who help me with the hospital procedures, medical checks and about almost everything, they are now also hindering my treatment."
What happened?
On a death fast for her right to a fair trial, arrested lawyer Ebru Timtik lost her life in the Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital in İstanbul on the 238th day of her death fast on August 27, 2020.
On September 4, arrested lawyer Aytaç Ünsal, who had also been on a death fast with the same demand, ended his death fast on the condition of being treated by independent physicians after the Court of Cassation released him on probation.
The 16th Penal Chamber of the Court of Cassation handed down its judgement in the trial of Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) and upheld all prison sentences, except for the ones given to lawyers Barkın Timtik, Selçuk Kozağaçlı and Ezgi Çakır.
The Chamber indicated that there was no ground to give a judgement about lawyer Ebru Timtik as she had lost her life on a death fast. The execution of lawyer Aytaç Ünsal's sentence will be deferred until his treatment ends.
