Four university students from the Revolutionary Youth Associations (DGD) were taken into custody after hanging a banner at Demirören Shopping Mall on İstiklal Avenue in Beyoğlu, İstanbul on November 11.
Detained due to their banner that read, "The system of the [ruling Justice and Development Party] AKP kills, the media of the bosses hides the truths", the students have been released on probation.
Taken to the penal judgeship of peace at the İstanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan together with two other people who were detained while trying to videotape the banner and detention of the students by the police, all of the detained were released yesterday evening (November 12).
In addition to the banner, the students also distributed flyers on İstiklal Avenue with one sentence written on them: "It is not depression that kills, it is the system of the AKP!." Shortly after this protest, the students were detained and taken to the police station in Karaköy.
Speaking to bianet, their lawyer Ezgi Önalan has indicated that the prosecutor's office referred the students to the penal judgeship of peace to be released on probation and the judgeship has ruled that they shall be released "with an international travel ban and on the condition that they give signatures at the police station once a week."
