The Ministry of Justice has announced Assoc. Prof. Saadet Yüksel will serve as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) for nine years in the name of Turkey.
Yüksel got 111 votes in an election that was held after the tenure of the current judge at the ECtHR, Prof. Dr. Işıl Karakaş, ended, the ministry said.
The Ministry suggested three people for the judgeship, sending a list to the Secretariat of the Council of Europe (CoE). After an examination at the Advisory Panel of the CoE, the list was sent to the Committee on Election of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), according to the Ministry's statement.
The process was coordinated by the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs, the statement said.
Minister of Justice Abdulhamit Gül also congratulated Yüksel in a tweet.
About Saadet Yüksel
Yüksel took her master's degree from Harvard University and completed her doctorate at İstanbul University. She worked as a visiting lecturer at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar.
Serving as the Chair of the Department of Law at İstanbul University, Yüksel also gives lectures at Koç University.
