Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer made a statement about the appointment of teachers in İstanbul yesterday (January 18). Özer has announced that "50 percent of the 15,000 teachers to be appointed on January 31, so 7,500 teachers, will be employed in İstanbul.
Noting that the Ministry has "speeded up the investments in education throughout Turkey", Minister Özer has said that they, as the Ministry, "attach a particular importance to İstanbul" in that regard.
According to the Minister, the amount of "investments made in education in İstanbul has been over 5 billion lira in 2022 so far."
While Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer has said that 15,000 teachers will be appointed to work in the public sector on January 31, the statement made by former Education Minister Ziya Selçuk in July 2021 indicated that the number of potential teachers awaiting appointment was 500,041, according to the number of people who took the Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS) in the years of 2019 and 2020.
Moreover, in 2002, the number of teachers working at the official educational institutions affiliated with Turkey's Ministry of National Education was 516,242. This number increased to 598,367 in 2007, to 731,257 in 2011, to 893,558 in 2019 and became 858,010 in 2013. In 2021, as of March 11, the number of teachers working in these institutions was 865,405.
In 2020, the Ministry of National Education also appointed contract teachers. The number of all contract teachers on duty in 2021 was 217,546 in Turkey as of March 30, 2021. (RT/SD)
