An employee of the A-101 grocery chain in Eryaman, Ankara, was forced to resign after "drinking three bottles of water and a cake," according to the Mağaza Market Sen union.
Egemen Köse, 20, said the company threatened him to terminate his contract for "behaviors that do not comply with the rules of ethics and goodwill," as per a rule known as Code-29 if he refuses to resign.
He was held responsible for all the missing goods after an inventory count, he said. "I drank three bottles of water and a cake. I told the deputy manager about this. I was off the next day. They carried out a partial inventory count in the store. They found a deficit of 182 lira. Fifty pieces of bread, 45-50 bottles of water..."
Köse, a student, said he was only paid 300 lira for 23 days of working while he should have been about 2,500 lira.
This was not an individual case as workers have to pay for the deficits that are found after inventory counts in many A-101 stores, said the union. (HA/VK)
