The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the state agency responsible for producing official statistics on Turkey, has announced the "Labor Force Statistics" in the country for January 2021.
According to TurkStat, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and over decreased by 1 thousand to 3 million 861 thousand persons in January 2021 when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate was measured as 12.2 percent with 0.4 point decrease.
The TurkStat has also indicated that the number of employed persons increased by 822 thousand to 27 million 706 thousand persons in January 2021 when compared to the previous month. The employment rate was 43.8 percent with a 1.2 percentage point increase.
Labor force participation: 49.9 percent
The number of persons in the labour force was 31 million 567 thousand persons with 821 thousand persons increase in January 2021 when compared to the previous month. Labour force participation rate was 49.9 percent with a 1.2 percentage point increase.
Youth unemployment rate: 24.7 percent
According to the TurkStat figures, the youth unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 24.7 percent with a 0.7 percentage point decrease when compared to the previous month and the employment rate was 30.1 percent with 0.5 percentage point increase.
The labour force participation rate in this age group was 39.9 percent with a 0.2 percentage point increase compared to the previous month.
54.5 percent of employment in services sector
In January 2021, the number of agricultural employment increased by 366 thousand persons, industry increased by 14 thousand persons and the services increased by 451 thousand persons while the employment in construction decreased by 9 thousand persons.
According to the distribution of employment by sector; 18.6 percent was employed in agriculture, 21.1 percent was in industry, 5.8 percent was in construction and 54.5 percent was employed in services.
Unregistered employment
In January 2021, the rate of unregistered employment, which shows the share of employment who are not affiliated with social security institution in total employment was 28 percent with a 3.6 percentage point decrease compared to the same month of the previous year.
The rate of unregistered employment in the non-agricultural sector was 16.8 percent with a 5.1 percentage point decrease compared to the same month of the previous year.
'Complementary indicators'In introducing this month's labor force statistics, the TurkStat has shared the following information as to the new regulations: "In the Household Labour Force Survey as of January 2021, simultaneously with the European Union (EU) countries; new regulations have been made in order to comply with the 19th International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS) Resolutions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the relevant EU regulations. "With the 19th ICLS, complementary indicators were defined in addition to employment and unemployment in order to better follow the developments in the labour market. These complementary indicators, which are published by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), have started to be included in this press release. In addition, labour force statistics, which are published as 3 months moving averages in current, will be published as independent monthly estimates as of January 2021. Detailed information on the new regulations can be found in the methodological document in the annex." Accordingly, the "seasonally adjusted complementary labour force indicators" have been shared by the institute with the following graph: Based on this graph, the agency has commented, "In January 2021, the rate of composite measure of labour underutilization consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labour force and unemployment was 29.1 percent with a 0.7 percentage point increase compared to the previous month. While combined rate of time-related underemployment and unemployment realized as 19.7 percent, combined rate of unemployment and potential labour force realized as 22.5 percent." * Click here to access the full statistics |
