A Green Left (Yeşil Sol) Party MP has raised concerns about the annual water cuts experienced by inmates during the summer months in Adana, one of Turkey's hottest cities located in the south.
Submitting a parliamentary question to the justice minister, Tülay Hatimoğlulları emphasized that the continuous disruption of water supply constituted a violation of prisoners' rights at the Kürkçüler No.2 Type-T Prison.
With temperatures soaring to 35 degrees Celsius in Adana, and the sensible temperature often surpassing 40 degrees, the interruption of water services during these scorching days has created a pressing issue, said the MP. In particular, prisoners' ability to fulfill basic hygiene needs, such as bathing and using the toilet, has been severely compromised.
Seeking answers and prompt action, Hatimoğulları directed a series of inquiries to Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç. She asked why the water supply to inmates was being cut, and why this recurring issue persisted specifically during the summer months at Kürkçüler Prison.
Furthermore, she sought assurance that immediate steps would be taken to address the water crisis faced by prisoners during the sweltering summer season. Hatimoğulları also raised concerns about the long-standing and widely discussed human rights violations in prisons, urging the ministry to establish an effective monitoring mechanism to combat these issues.
