A child has died in an irrigation pool in Ereğli district in Konya while trying to rescue a sheep that fell in the water.
Noticing the sheep in the water while he was grazing cattle in the Sarıca Neighborhood, 12-year-old M.D. jumped in the water.
Seeing the child flailing in the water, the father and elder sister jumped in the water. Leaving the water afterwards, the two called an ambulance, gendarmerie and fire brigade teams. Following their search and rescue efforts, the teams found the deceased body of M.D. in the pool.
After the related examination of the prosecutor's office, the dead body of the child was taken to the Ereğli Public Hospital.
Speaking to bianet, Ertan Karabıyık from the Development Workshop previously explained how drowning occurs in irrigation canals:
"Large irrigation canals are flowing fast. Whether you know how to swim or not, you suddenly get caught and lose control. Due to its nature, you cannot hold on to a place, and you cannot get out. There is nothing to hold on to like a branch or something. Since there is no protection around the canals... In the past, there were also problems with the canals in the cities. They surrounded those in the city with protection and drownings decreased." (AÖ/SD)
