University students Doğukan Gürbey and Cihan Çiçek have been placed under house arrest after being taken into custody for distributing the copies of Şilan Dilpalta's letter from prison to citizens.
Delipalta was arrested after joining the protests against Prof. Melih Bulu, who was appointed as a rector to Boğaziçi University by President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The two students, Gürbey and Çiçek, were detained the other day. After they gave their statements at the prosecutor's office yesterday (February 22), they were referred to the court to be arrested on charges of "insulting the President", "insult" and "provoking the public to hostility and hatred."
The court has placed them under house arrest.
With this recent court verdict, the number of people given house arrest over Boğaziçi University protests has increased to 26.
Since January 4, 2021, when wide-scale protests against the rector appointment began, at least 560 students have been detained and nine are still arrested on charges of "provoking the public to hostility and hatred" and "resisting to prevent fulfilment of duty." (EKN/SD)
