Musa Doğan Released - No Extradition to Turkey

Last January the Swedish police took Musa Doğan under arrest on the grounds that INTERPOL issued a warrant upon Turkey' request. He has now been released. Rights activists launched action against Doğan's extradition to Turkey, stating that his life would be in danger upon his return to Turkey.

Following his arrest, Doğan was taken to court on 16 September for the first time. Two days later the court decided for his release. His lawyers announced that they eliminated the possibility of Doğan's extradition to Turkey after his acquittal.

Doğan had been sent to penal servitude for life because of his alleged membership of the illegal Turkey Communist Party/Marxist-Leninist (TKP/ML). He was granted asylum in Sweden when he was released because of health problems resulting from his previous participation in hunger strikes. (SN/EÜ/VK)
