COVID-19 | Turkey reports the first cases of Omicron variant

The Ministry of Health has announced that over 345 thousand tests were conducted, 17,956 people were diagnosed with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and 182 people died of the disease in Turkey in the last 24 hours.

The Ministry of Health announced the latest figures on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Turkey yesterday (December 12).

While the daily number of new cases has been announced as 17,956, 182 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19 in Turkey in the last 24 hours. While 22,648 people have recovered in a day, the number of tests conducted in the last 24 hours has been announced as 345,754.

First Omicron cases reported in Turkey

Turkey on Saturday (December 11) reported the first six cases of the new Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus.

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca confirmed the cases during budget talks at the General Assembly of the Parliament, saying that the cases have been reported in İstanbul and western İzmir province.

As reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), "they are outpatients who do not have any problems and are with extremely mild symptoms," Koca said, adding that the infected have not been hospitalized. Koca gave no further details about how they caught the variant.

South African scientists announced on November 24 the discovery of the novel variant, which has several mutations.

The World Health Organization (WHO said that the omicron variant, which it had declared a "variant of concern," has been detected in 57 countries so far, with more countries reporting omicron cases since then.

25,238 doses administered in a day

As of 7 pm on December 12, 25,238 vaccine doses, either Sinovac or Pfizer/BioNTech, were administered in Turkey in the last 24 hours.

According to the vaccination data shared by Turkey's Health Ministry, while 56,517,947 people have been vaccinated with the first dose in Turkey so far, 50,916,147 have received the second dose and 12,625,778 people have been given the third dose. Taken together, the total number of vaccine doses administered so far is 121,625,778 in Turkey.

While 91.05 percent of Turkey's population over the age of 18 has been vaccinated with the first dose, this rate is 82.03 percent for the second dose.

Global death toll has topped 5 million

Since December 2019, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has claimed over 5.3 million lives in 191 countries and regions.

Over 270.1 million cases have been reported worldwide, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University.

Over 8 billion doses in the world

According to the figures shared by the World Health Organization (WHO), 8,158,815,265 doses of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines were administered across the world as of December 8, 2021.
