Dr. Cenk Yiğiter, who was discharged from the Faculty of Law at Ankara University as per a Statutory Decree and is also an Academic for Peace, was taken into custody at his house Ankara today (November 9).
As reported by Mülkiye Haber news website, Yiğiter was detained by the police officers from the Anti-Terror Bureau at the early morning hours today. While the reason for his detention has still been unknown, it has been reported that some students have been detained along with Yiğiter.
Discharge, studentship, cancellation of internship
Dr. Cenk Yiğiter was discharged from his post at Ankara University as per the Statutory Decree no. 679 on January 6, 2017.
In 2017, he entered the university entrance exam and qualified to study at the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema of the same university.
However, due to a change in the regulations, he could not enroll at the university on the ground that "he was discharged from public service."
In 2018, his law internship was cancelled.
On October 30, 2018, he was sentenced to 1 year, 5 months and 15 days in prison for having "insulted the President" with a tweet that he posted. The Ankara 20th Penal Court of First Instance did not suspend the announcement of the verdict. (BK/SD)
