Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Mungan arrested over signing the declaration “We will not be a party to this crime” has sent a note to the Peace Forum of the Boğaziçi University where she is an academic member.  

Mungan has said; “We, who long for peace despite all intimidations and oppressions, continue standing by our words”.  

Discussed peace in her lectures

Three academics Associate Prof. Kıvanç Ersoy (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts Univ., mathematics), Assistant Prof. Esra Mungan (Boğaziçi Univ., psychology) and Dr. Muzaffer Kaya (fired as a consequence of the academics' statement from Nişantaşı University, history) reading the statement on behalf of Academics for Peace/İstanbul group reiterating their peace demand and detained afterwards, had been arrested by court on duty.

Mungan has sent the Forum arranged upon her arrest the following message:  

“We, who long for peace despite all intimidations and oppressions, continue standing by our words. We and everybody who have come together to act in solidarity for peace, will continue the  fight for a Turkey which respects human rights, acts abiding by its own law and the principles of universal law which it is obliged to comply with, takes sides with a completely democratic and independent equality and freedom where no one oppresses the other and a coexistence in diversity is realized. I hug you all”.    

Chancellor met with Chief Prosecutor for the academic

According to the report of Önder Öneş from Hürriyet daily, Boğaziçi University Chancellor Prof. Dr. Gülay Barbarosoğlu has yesterday (March 16) requested a meeting with the İstanbul Chief Prosecution.

Chancellor Barbaraosoğlu’s request of trial without arrest for Mungan has been received favourably by Istanbul Chief Prosecution.

No statement on the content of the meeting has been made yet. Prof. Barbarosoğlu has later let the Senate of the University gather and held a meeting regarding the issue. (BK/DG)

Arrested Academic Esra Mungan: We Stand by Our Word
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Esra Mungan who got arrested with other two colleagues over signing the declaration of the Academics For Peace, has noted in her message to Boğaziçi University Peace Forum: “We stand by our word”.
