The Turkey Environmental Platform (TÜRÇEP) has announced that "there will be no votes for those who support the building of nuclear power stations, those who close their ears to our demands for decarbonisation, those who ignore renewable energy and possible energy savings."
"Take Back Plan for Nuclear Power Stations"
The representatives of 144 environmental organisations announced at their meeting in Istanbul last weekend that the provisional law which foresees the building of nuclear power stations is "quietly being passed" by the parliamentary environment and energy commissions and that it has brought an increase in public expenditure. The environmentalists have called for the law to be scrapped.
Parliament Discussing Nuclear Power Plans
The parliamentary general committee is today discussing the "Building of Nuclear Power Plants, their Management and Energy Sales".
TÜRÇEP fears that this law will turn Turkey into a nuclear waste depot, which would mean a nuclear disaster. They emphasise that developed countries are closing down their nuclear power plants. So far, Turkey has not built any nuclear power stations.
First of All Decarbonisation
TÜRÇEP is calling on the USA and Australia to sign the Kyoto Protocol, and says that for Turkey to sign the protocol it needs to "decarbonise", that is decrease the use of fossil fuels.
The environmental platform also calls for the scrapping of another law, which encourages the building of thermal energy plants by guaranteeing to buy the energy of any plant which produces more than 1,000 megawatts. The environmentalists claim that this law would increase public expenditure. (EO)
