An activist group has filed a criminal complaint against the Canada-based gold mining firm, the license of which was suspended until the end of 2020.

The Alamos Gold firm allegedly continue to cut down trees as part of the construction of a gold mine near Ida (Kaz) Mountains in the western province of Çanakkale.

An activist group named "Everywhere is Ida Mountains" has filed a criminal complaint against the firm and held a statement for the press at Çanakkale Courthouse.

The group said it documented that trees are still being cut down in Kirazlı Gold and Silver Mine Site, although the company's license was not renewed after it expired on October 13.

Large-scale protests were staged in July and August against the construction of the mine. Tens of thousands of trees were cut down during the construction work.

"The operating license no. 82225 of Alamos Gold and Doğu Biga Mining for the Kirazlı Gold and Silver mining Project expired 10 October 13, 2019, and was not renewed.

"Nevertheless, it is seen that they continued to cut down trees on October 24.

"Based on Article 56 of the Constitution, we defend our right to live in a healthy environment and we reiterate that we will follow up all massacres in our Ida Mountains.

"We request from the authorities to put an end to the unlawful activity of cutting down trees by Alamos Gold and Doğu Biga Mining and take legal action against them." (PT/VK)
