Stating in a session held on Friday that they are ‘deeply concerned’ about promixity of Akkuyu powerplant, Northern Cyprus Parliament has decided to make a call for construction of the plant to be halted.
As reported by BBC Türkçe, possible leaks in case of a nuclear accident or strong earthquake were emphasized, and it was stressed that magnitude of disasters may augment by strong winds and sea currents.
Groundbreaking ceremony of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant was held on April 3 with the participation of Russia’s Leader Vladimir Putin and President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan via videoconference.
“It endangers neighboring countries as well”
It was also advocated that Turkey violates Convention on International Fire Safety concerning the precautions to limit the damage, which might occur in case of an accident, to minimum.
In its resolution, the Cypriot Parliament noted that Turkey’s nuclear power plant plants directly expose Eastern Meditarranean countries to radioactivity risk and Meditarranean waters face the risk of pollution. (PT/TK)
