Parent to get partial refund for private school fee

A private school in Turkey's Aegean province of İzmir will partially refund the school fee to a parent who complained that the students could not get education and other services in the way that was indicated in the contract due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Examining the application of the parent who said that "the private school did not offer services as specified in the contract" due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the İzmir Consumer Arbitration Committee has concluded that the parent should get a partial refund for the school fee.

In the application to the Committee, the parent said that he or she signed a contract with the school foreseeing an annual payment of 29 thousand lira (~4,000 USD). But the school failed to offer services in the way written in the contract, complained the parent to the Committee.

Accordingly, parent İ.A. demanded the refund of 10 thousand 242 lira 9 kurush paid for education and food services. The Committee has agreed on a partial refund of this amount and concluded that 4 thousand 369 lira and 62 kurush should be paid back to the parent.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Consumer Protection Association (TÜKODER) İzmir Chair Cevdet Uçan has said that after the Committee examined the application in detail, it has concluded that distance education could be given for 60 days and the calculation was made accordingly.

The Committee has found that the expenditures of the school dropped by 36.71 percent and concluded that the amount corresponding to 60 days of education should be paid back to the parent. (AÖ/SD)
