5 cities account for over 50 percent of Turkey’s total GDP

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the state agency responsible for producing official statistics on Turkey, has released its statistics on the Gross Domestic Product by Provinces for 2019.

According to the data of the Institute, İstanbul had the highest share of Gross Domestic Product with 30.7 percent in 2019.

According to the estimation of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by provinces; İstanbul reached the highest GDP with 1 trillion 327 billion 452 million Turkish Lira* (TRY) for 2019 and gained 30.7 percent of total GDP.

İstanbul was followed by Ankara with 395 billion 731 million TRY (9.2 percent) and İzmir with 263 billion 38 million TRY (6.1 percent).

In the estimation of GDP by provinces, the last three provinces were Tunceli, Ardahan and Bayburt with 4 billion 134 million TRY, 3 billion 399 million TRY and 2 billion 840 million TRY, respectively.

The first five provinces with the highest share of GDP accounted for 53.7 percent of total GDP of Turkey, according to the TurkStat.

Van, Urfa, Ağrı had lowest GDP per capita

İstanbul reached the highest GDP per capita with 86 thousand 798 TRY. İstanbul was followed by the western province of Kocaeli with 81 thousand 228 TRY and Ankara with 71 thousand 27 TRY.

In the estimation of GDP per capita, the last three provinces were the eastern provinces of Van, Urfa and Ağrı with 18 thousand 708 TRY, 17 thousand 465 TRY and 16 thousand 727 TRY, respectively.

In 2019, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of fourteen of 81 provinces were over the average of that of Turkey.

Share of provinces in economic activities

According to the TurkStat figures, when the activities which constitute GDP were examined; İstanbul, having the highest share of GDP at current prices in 2019, also reached the highest share in all economic activities except for agriculture and other service activities.

The share of İstanbul in information and communication activities was 65.4 percent, finance and insurance activities was 58.2 percent, professional, administrative and support service activities was 46.5 percent, services sector was 40.5 percent and construction sector was 35.6 percent.

Turkey's Central Anatolian provicen of Konya was the first among 81 provinces with a share of 6.1 percent in agriculture, forestry, fishing and Ankara with a share of 29.2 percent in other service activities.

Services sector had the highest share

While İstanbul had a share of 40.5 percent in the total of the services sector in 2019, the share of the services sector in the total GDP of the province was 32.1 percent. The industry sector was the second with a share of 17.1 percent, professional, administrative and support service activities was the third with a share of 8 percent in the total GDP of İstanbul.

Annual GDP with chain linked volume index

According to the TurkStat, the annual GDP with chain linked volume index increased by 0.9 percent in 2019 compared to 2018, GDP percentage change of 48 provinces were increased over the average of Turkey.

The first three provinces with the highest increase in 2019 compared to the previous year were Siirt with 12.8 percent percentage change, Giresun with 10.6 percent and Artvin with 9.8 percent, respectively.

The three provinces with the highest decrease compared to the previous year were Zonguldak with 8.9 percent percentage change, Kırıkkale with 10.4 percent and Karabük with 12.5 percent, respectively.

Contribution to the GDP

The capital city of Ankara had the largest contribution with 0.43 percent to the 0.9 percent increase in annual GDP compared to the previous year by chain linked volume index. Ankara was followed by İstanbul with 0.40 percent and Antalya with 0.14 percent.

The provinces with the largest negative contribution to the annual GDP percentage change in 2019 were Kocaeli with 0.23 percent, İzmir with 0.11 percent, Bursa and Hatay with 0.08 percent. (SD)
