The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has announced the Labor Force Statistics for October 2019 today (January 10).
Accordingly, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over has increased by 608 thousand to 4 million 396 thousand people in October 2019 when compared with the same period of the previous year.
As for the unemployment rate, it has marked a 1.8-percentage point increase and been calculated as 13.4 percent. Non-agricultural unemployment rate has occurred as 15.7 percent with a 2.1-point increase.
In September, the rate of unemployment across Turkey was announced as 13.8 percent and the number of unemployed as 4 million 566 thousand.
Employment rate: 45.9 percent
In October 2019, the number of employed people has decreased by 527 thousand to 28 million 343 thousand people when compared with the same period of the previous year. The employment rate has occurred as 45.9 percent, marking a 1.6-point decrease.
The number of agricultural employment has decreased by 270 thousand people, industry has decreased by 30 thousand people and construction has decreased by 305 thousand people while the number of employment in services has increased by 78 thousand people.
According to distribution of employment by sector; 17.9 percent have been employed in agriculture, 20.0 percent employed in industry, 5.8 percent in construction and 56.3 percent have been employed in services.
Labour force participation rate: 53 percent
The number of people in the labour force has been calculated as 32 million 740 thousand, with an increase of 82 thousand people when compared with the same period of the previous year. Accordingly, labour force participation rate has been 53 percent, marking a 0.7-point decrease.
Rate of unregistered employment: 34.9 percent
In October 2019, the ratio of those working without any social security relating to the main job has occurred as 34.9 percent with a 1.2-percentage point increase when compared with the same period of the previous year.
In the non-agricultural sector, the rate of unregistered employment has been announced as 23.5 percent in October, marking a 1.1- point increase when compared to the same period of the previous year.
Youth unemployment: 25.3 percent
For the 15-64 age group, the unemployment rate has been calculated as 13.7 percent with a 1.8-point increase and non-agricultural unemployment rate has occurred as 15.8 percent with a 2.1-point increase when compared to the same period of the previous year.
In this age group, employment rate has occurred as 50.5 percent with a 1.6-percentage point decrease and labour force participation rate has occurred as 58.6 percent with a 0.5-percentage point decrease.
The youth unemployment rate between the ages of 15 and 24 has been announced as 25.3 percent with a 3-point increase and the youth employment rate has been realized as 32.8 percent with a 1.9-percentage point decrease compared with the same period of the previous year.
In the same period, labour force participation rate has occured as 43.8 percent with a 0.8-point decrease. The rate of neither in employment nor in education has been announced as 26.0 percent with a 1.3-percentage point increase compared with the same period of 2018.
Seasonally adjusted unemployment rates
Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has been calculated as 13.6 percent with a 0.3-point decrease. The number of unemployed persons has decreased by 96 thousand to 4 million 438 thousand people.
Seasonally adjusted employment rate has occurred as 45.7 percent with a 0.1-percentage point increase. The number of employed people has been estimated as 28 million 229 thousand people with a 122-thousand people increase when compared with the same period of the previous year.
Seasonally adjusted labour force participation rate has been 52.9 percent without any change compared with the previous period. The number of labour force has been estimated as 32 million 667 thousand people with an increase of 27 thousand people.
According to the seasonally adjusted number of employment by sectors, employment in agriculture has decreased by 92 thousand people while construction has increased by 45 thousand people, services has increased by 49 thousand people and industry has increased by 120 thousand people. (HA/SD)
