Organized per annum upon bianet’s call, journalism field meetings have been held under the titles of Human Rights, Freedom of Expression and Gender based journalism at Taksim Nippon Hotel in İstanbul.
40 people from 29 NGOs attended the meetings that were moderated by bianet Human Rights Editor Ayça Söylemez, Freedom of Expression editor Elif Akgül, and Women and LGBTI Rights Editor Çiçek Tahaoğlu.
The participants voiced positive and negative points they see in human rights, freedom of expression and gender oriented journalism. They mutually discussed the ways to take bianet forward.
Human rights and freedom of expression oriented journalism
The participants most talked about making the news visible and spreading it via right channels.
The participants described bianet as a “reliable, qualified, correct and collectable source” and said that they also train themselves terminologically.
bianet was advised to maintain platforms for discussion, hold training workshops in cities, strengthen local networks to increase its visibility.
Gender oriented journalism
The participants said that bianet distinguishes from main stream media and in this respect, bianet is an important source for the participants.
Finding bianet’s works in the field of Women and LGBTI rights positive, the participants made recommendations about the content.
The participants offered recommendations about covering imprisoned LGBTI individuals.
