The February 6 earthquakes in Pazarcık and Elbistan, Maraş killed at least 1,444 and injured at least 3,500 people in Syria, Reuters reports, basing their figures shared by the Damascus government and the rescue teams in northwest Syria.
The earthquakes severely hit the cities of Afrin, Kobanî, Qamishlo, and Hasakah in northeastern Syria, as well as in Damascus, Idlib, Aleppo, Hama, Latakia, Tartus, and Raqqa, according to the news of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (IKRG)-based news site Rudaw.
One of the most severely struck cities are Cindires, where 80 buildings toppled, leaving dozens of people under the rubble, and Afrin, where approximately 30 buildings collapsed.
Speaking to Rudaw, Deputy Director of Civil Defense (White Helmets) Munir Mustafa said that at least 450 people have lost their lives and 1,300 people have been injured in Idlib, Azez, and Afrin.
Mustafa stated that 54 people in Cindires and 10 people in Afrin lost their lives More than 200 people were injured, with numbers likely to increase. "There is a need for humanitarian aid in this region. No one has delivered us any aid so far," Mustafa said. (WM)
