More companies in Turkey switch to cage-free eggs

Dozens of firms in Turkey have committed to the transition to cage-free eggs, according to the 2021 egg monitoring report by Cage-Free Turkey (Kafessiz Türkiye).

Out of 82 brands operating in the sectors of accommodation, hospitality, food and and retail, 40 have announced their commitment to the plan, says the report.

The biggest progress was in the accommodation sector with 13 hotel and accommodation brands to take part in the cage-free transition.

Most of the firms stated they will have fully switched to cage-free eggs by 2015, according to the report.

The companies that have completed the transition to the cage-free system show that this can be done rapidly. Six firms that have completed the process are Beyaz Fırın, Dedeman Hotels & Resorts International, Krispy Kreme, Barilla, Raw for Us and Dr. Oetker.

The campaign director of Cage Free Turkey, Emre Kaplan, said, "This report makes it clear that there is no room for jam-packed cages in the future of egg production.

"Many firms have showed a strong will to build a more conscientious future."

Cage Free Turkey says meat producers should also adapt to this and production facilities should be designed for improved animal welfare.

The report, which provides information on the transition to alternative production systems, warns producers about systems that do not meet welfare conditions, such as convertible/combi systems and limited/selective access systems.
