DINK MURDER TRIAL
Witnesses to be Brought to Court on Compulsion after 4 Years
The Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court accepted the plaintiff lawyers' request to re-investigate the TÜBİTAK report on the allegedly missing footage of the Hrant Dink murder. Witnesses Çakmak and Yıldırım will be brought to court on compulsion at the next hearing on 30 May.

Istanbul Bar Association on the Street for Press Freedom
About 500 members of the Istanbul Bar Association demonstrated against custody and arrests of journalists on Tuesday and called for an independent judiciary. Their motto was "Rule of law instead of police state". They laid down a wreath in front of the Atatürk bust.

Lawyer Aslan: Prolonged Detention of Student Edemir Unfounded
Middle-East Technical University student Edemir will remain in detention until the coming hearing on 23 June. The Istanbul 10th High Criminal Court did not take into consideration the prosecutor's final speech in favour of Edemir's release pending trial.

First Hearing of Prime Suspect at Juvenile Court
The prosecution of Ogün Samast, one of the prime suspects in the murder case of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, started on 28 February at a juvenile court in Istanbul. Samast's request for a closed session was rejected. Nine of Dink's relatives were accepted as co-plaintiffs.

University students in Istanbul reiterated the demand for education in the mother language on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day. One student gave a symbolic Kurdish lesson next to the campus of the Yıldız Technical University.

Journalist Zengin Remains in Detention
The Istanbul 10th High Criminal court rejected the release of journalist and interpreter Suzan Zengin. Zengin will have been kept in detention for almost two years by the time of the next hearing on 14 June.

"Bag of Laws" Passes from Parliament
The controversial "Bag Law" passed through parliament. Students sentenced for "terror crimes" are exempt from the amnesty for students. The right to social security of victims of the military coups in 1972 and 1980 was limited to those who were acquitted at the time.

Yıldız's father could not be caught yet. He claimed to have killed his own son because of his being homosexual. Darama, who got injured in the course of the incident, was admitted to case. Lambda's request to join the case was denied. The witness claimed he had been threatened.
